About Us

Valerie is the Owner and lead Photographer at Slash Photography. Her background as a Graphic Designer was what first sparked her love for taking pictures: finding that editing images was one of her favorite things to do, she decided to branch out into photography, upgrading her skills through Algonquin College and subsequently founding Slash Photography. A native of Alexandria, Ontario, she studied Graphic Design at La Cité Collégiale in Ottawa, after which she lived in Montreal until 2010 when she returned to the Ottawa Valley to be closer to her family and friends. Keeping busy with several things on the go is something that is in her blood: Valerie and her two older siblings all have a tendency towards having more than one job, and the name ‘Slash’ is a nod to that, as she explains “I've always had more than one job or more than one title at a job, so there was always a ‘slash’ in between everything I do: Graphic Designer slash Photographer slash Web Designer slash …” Valerie strongly identifies what she does with who she is, finding inspiration in the people she meets and works with every day, but when not working hard to sculpt memories for her clients, she loves spending time with family and friends, cooking, baking, working out, practicing and expanding her skills and generally enjoying life at home with her two cats Betty and Winston.

Cassandra has been working with Slash Photography since 2013 as an assistant photographer, and in early 2015 became a partner/co-owner with Valerie Menard. Photography has always been a passion for her, and she can’t remember a time when she didn’t have an assortment of film cameras to play with, although she finds digital camera technology equally rewarding. After completing her certificate in Photography from La Cité Collégiale in Ottawa, she was concerned that the photographic community was so competitive that she might not be able to find full time work, but between her day job at a Bell store and her work with Slash, photography keeps her busy on several fronts, giving her the opportunity to be creative and do what she loves. Capturing special moments for people is a great joy, and Cassandra finds it very satisfying when customers love her work, and looks forward to the day when she and Valerie have their own studio to work out of. The eldest of four children, she loves spending time with family and friends, working out and caring for her two cats Darwin & Newton.
